Mnemonic

増える fueru — kanji 増 (to increase) + the ichidan ending える. Intransitive: a number or amount rises on its own, subject marked by が. Its transitive partner is 増やす (fuyasu, to increase). The opposite flow is 減る (heru, to decrease), the intransitive pair of 減らす. 増 is the shinjitai form.
