場合 baai — 場 (place, setting) + 合 (to fit, to match). The setting (場) in which some circumstance fits (合) is a "case" or "situation." Used in 「~の場合」 / 「~場合は」 to state a condition. Compared with 時 (toki, "when"), 場合 carries a stronger sense of hypothesis or condition.
