Mnemonic

あつい — 厚い, Yamato. An i-adjective. The same sound atsui carries three kanji ── 暑い (hot weather) / 熱い (hot to touch) / 厚い (thick). Three meanings on one sound, the kanji decides which. This word lives in the slug atsui-thick, separated from atsui-hot. The opposite ── 薄い usui-thin. For tangibly thick things ── 厚い本 (a thick book), 厚い服 (thick clothes). The kanji 厚 stretches into abstract usage ── 友情が厚い (a deep friendship), 厚い信頼 (firm trust). The Korean 'duteopda / dukkeopda' split runs along exactly the same line. The Korean reading hu is sister to the onyomi こう.
