Collocations

来年 (rainen, next year)来年の (rainen no, next year's)来年度 (rainendo, next fiscal year)再来年 (sarainen, year after next)来年もよろしく (rainen mo yoroshiku, year-end farewell)

Mnemonic

来年 rainen — 来 + 年 = the year coming = next year. Parallel to 来週/来月. Japanese workplaces and government run on an April-to-March fiscal year, so 来年度 (rainendo, next fiscal year) can refer to a different start point than 来年 (next calendar year) — in November, 来年度 still means starting next April. A common source of confusion for Korean/Chinese speakers used to January starts. The set phrase 来年もよろしく is the standard year-end farewell.

Quick check

  1. In November, what does 来年度の予算 refer to?
