Mnemonic

靴下 kutsushita — literally "shoe (靴) + under (下)" = the thing under your shoe = sock. While English "sock" comes from Latin soccus (a light shoe), Japanese coined the compound transparently. Traditional Japanese socks タビ (tabi) have a split between big toe and the rest — designed for wearing with 草履 (zouri) or 下駄 (geta) sandals. The dressing verb is 履く, shared with shoes (lower-body wear).
