Mnemonic

Juuichi (十一) is 十 (10) + 一 (1) = 11. Japanese forms 11–19 transparently as 10 + unit (10+1, 10+2, 10+3…). Twenty and above use forms like nijuu (二十). English eleven and twelve are opaque Germanic forms ("one left," "two left" of twelve). Japanese and Chinese keep the additive logic transparent.
