Mnemonic
追 zhuī "to chase, pursue" + 究 jiū "to investigate thoroughly": to pursue and dig to the bottom, i.e. to investigate responsibility, to call to account. Korean uses the same characters for chu-gu (追究), but Chinese 追究 mainly means relentlessly investigating responsibility or fault (追究责任 to call to account). Note this differs from Korean chu-gu "to pursue a goal". 追 means "to chase" (追求); 究 means "to investigate" (研究, 究竟).
