Mnemonic

壮 zhuàng "robust, grand" + 大 dà "big": to become robust and big, i.e. to grow strong, to strengthen. Korean jang-dae (壯大) leans toward "large in build", but Chinese 壮大 is common as a verb for an organization or force "growing larger and stronger" (发展壮大), the same characters with a different slant. It is both intransitive and transitive ("to grow" / "to build up"). 壮 is the 壮 of 强壮 and 壮观.
