之 zhī (classical particle "of") + 一 yī "one": one of (the aforementioned group). A literary expression appended to a noun phrase (最伟大的科学家之一, one of the greatest scientists). 之 is the classical "of/among". Distinguish 之一 (one of several) from 第一 (dìyī, the first, in rank).
