智 zhì "wisdom" + 力 lì "power": the power of wisdom, i.e. intelligence, intellect. It corresponds to the Korean words ji-ryeok (智力) and ji-neung (知能). The mental ability to understand, judge and reason (智力开发 developing intelligence, 智力测验 an intelligence test). 智 means "wisdom" (智慧, 机智); 力 means "power, ability" (能力, 体力). Where 智商 (IQ) quantifies that ability, 智力 is the ability itself. In the same domain as 天赋 (innate talent).
