摘 zhāi "to pick out" + 要 yào "the essential": a Sino-Korean word "abstract, summary". To pick out (摘) the essentials (要), i.e. a condensed summary of a text’s core. 论文摘要 (a paper’s abstract), 内容摘要 (a content summary). Placed before the body to compress its core, opposite of 全文 (the full text). Similar to 概要 / 提要.
