勇 yǒng "brave" + 猛 měng "fierce in force": brave and fierce, i.e. valiant. Same as the Korean word yong-maeng (勇猛). A positive trait of fighting fiercely without fear (chiefly of warriors). Unlike 凶猛 (fierce and ferocious, neutral or negative), 勇猛 adds courage and is positive. 猛 means "fierce, violent" (猛烈).
