延 yán "to extend, prolong" + 续 xù "to continue": to extend and continue, i.e. to continue, to carry on (in time). Korean renders it as "to continue, carry on". A tradition, life or state continuing unbroken over time (延续传统 to carry on a tradition, 延续生命 to prolong life). It shares 延 with 延伸 (to extend in space), but 延续 focuses on continuing in time. 续 means "to continue" (继续 to continue, 连续 continuous).
