延 yán "to extend, prolong" + 伸 shēn "to stretch": to extend and reach out, i.e. to extend, to stretch out (in space). Korean renders it as "to extend, stretch". Two shades: a road or railway extending in space (铁路向西延伸) and figuratively a topic or scope broadening (延伸到生活). It shares 延 with 延续 (to continue in time), but 延伸 leans toward extending in space or scope. 伸 means "to stretch" (the 伸 of 伸缩).
