Mnemonic

虚 xū "empty, false" + 伪 wěi "fake, false": empty and false, i.e. hypocritical. Note that the Korean heo-wi (虛僞) is usually a noun for "falsehood" (untrue information), whereas Chinese 虚伪 mainly describes a person’s hypocritical character (an adjective): the same characters, a different use. 虚 is the 虚 of 虚拟 and 虚荣.
