维 wéi "to tie, maintain" + 护 hù "to guard, protect": to tie together and guard, i.e. to maintain, to safeguard, to uphold. Korean renders it as "to maintain, uphold, service". Two shades: safeguarding rights, order or stability (维护权益 to uphold rights) and maintaining equipment or systems (维护设备 to service equipment). 维 means "to tie, maintain" (维持 to sustain); 护 means "to guard" (保护 to protect).
