往 wǎng "to go, past" + 日 rì "day": days gone by, i.e. former days, the past. Literary. The 往 is in 往返 (round trip) and 以往 (formerly). Distinguish 往日 (past days) from 日后 (rìhòu, future days), opposite in time direction. Synonyms: 昔日 (xīrì), 过去 (guòqù).
