随 suí "to follow" + 即 jí "at once": right after, immediately. Following at once, used of an action that comes right after a preceding event (听到消息随即赶来). The 随 is in 随时 (anytime) and 随便. The 即 is in 立即 (immediately). Distinguish 随即 (right after) from 立刻 (lìkè, instantly).
