室 shì "room" + 外 wài "outside": outside the room, i.e. outdoors, outside. Same as the Korean word sil-oe (室外). It refers to the open space outside a building or room (室外活动 outdoor activities, 室外温度 outdoor temperature). It is the opposite of 室内 (indoors), the pair 外 "outside" against 内 "inside". 外 means "outside" (外面, 国外); 室 means "room". While close to 户外 (open-air), 室外 centers on the direct contrast with indoors.
