失 shī "to lose" + 落 luò "to fall, drop": to lose something and feel one’s spirits drop, i.e. to feel dejected, to feel a sense of loss. Korean renders it as "emptiness, a sense of loss, dejection". It names the hollow, deflated mood when an expectation or goal is lost (感到失落 to feel dejected, 失落感 a sense of loss). It can also mean "to lose an object", but in exams it is mainly the emotional state. 落 means "to fall" (下落); 失 means "to lose" (失去).
