生态 "ecology" + 系统 "system": the system living things form with their environment, i.e. an ecosystem. Same as the Korean word saeng-tae-gye (生態系). The whole system in which organisms (animals, plants, microbes) and the non-living environment (soil, water, air) interact within an area (森林生态系统 a forest ecosystem, 生态平衡 ecological balance). 生态 means "the living state of organisms"; 系统 means "system" (系统, 体系). A core environmental and scientific term.
