赡 shàn "to provide for amply" + 养 yǎng "to raise, support": to provide amply for, i.e. to support (parents or the elderly). Korean renders it as "to support, provide for". It is used especially of children supporting aged parents (赡养父母). It is the opposite direction from 抚养 fǔyǎng (to raise children): 赡养 is the young supporting the old, 抚养 is the old raising the young. 养 means "to raise" (养育 to nurture).
