荣 róng "glory" + 誉 yù "to praise, honor": shining honor, i.e. honor, glory. Same as the Korean word yeong-ye (榮譽). The shining honor or commendation won by outstanding achievement or merit (荣誉称号 an honorary title, 获得荣誉 to win honor, 荣誉感 a sense of honor). Unlike 名誉 (a reputation to be protected), 荣誉 focuses on shining honor earned through achievement. 荣 is the 荣 of 光荣 and 繁荣 (glory, prosperity); 誉 means "to praise, honor" (名誉, 赞誉). It shares 誉 with 名誉.
