Mnemonic

取 qǔ "to take" + 向 xiàng "to face, direction": the direction one takes, i.e. orientation, leaning, inclination. Korean renders it as "orientation, leaning" (broader than mere taste). The tendency to lean one way in values, consumption or politics (价值取向 value orientation). Unlike 爱好 (a simple hobby), 取向 is a directional tendency. 向 means "to face, direction" (方向).
