平 píng "level" + 静 jìng "calm": level and calm, i.e. tranquil, placid (still and composed, without agitation). Used of water, the mind, atmosphere (湖面平静, 内心平静). The 平 is in 平稳 and 和平. Antonyms: 激动 (jīdòng, agitated), 波动. Distinguish 平静 (generally tranquil, a state) from 镇静 (zhènjìng, composed in an emergency).
