Mnemonic

茂 mào "luxuriant" + 盛 shèng "abundant": vegetation growing thick and abundant, i.e. lush, luxuriant. Korean renders it as "lush". It is almost limited to plants, the dense growth of leaves and branches (枝叶茂盛 thick foliage). It shares 盛 with 旺盛 (vigor in general), but 茂盛 is specialized for plants. 茂 means "to grow thick".
