论 lùn "to discuss, argue" + 述 shù "to narrate, state": to narrate with reasoning, i.e. to expound, to discuss and set forth. Same as the Korean word non-sul (論述). Systematically explaining a topic or view with supporting reasons (系统论述 systematic exposition). It adds argument and assertion to mere narration (叙述). 论 reads lùn for "to discuss, theory" (讨论, 理论); 述 means "to narrate" (叙述, 陈述). It is a core verb of academic writing.
