两 liǎng "two" + 者 zhě "one, thing": the two (aforementioned), i.e. both. Refers to people, things, or concepts. 两者之间 = between the two. The 者 marks a person/thing, as in 作者 (author) and 读者 (reader). Distinguish 两者 (the two) from 双方 (shuāngfāng, both parties, of opposing/transacting sides).
