Mnemonic

开 kāi "to open" + 辟 pì "to open up, clear": to open up a path where there was none, i.e. to pioneer, to open up. Korean renders it as "to pioneer, open up". First opening a route, sea lane, market or field (开辟航线 to open a sea route, 开辟新方向 to open a new direction). It shares 开 with 开发 (to develop), but 开辟 focuses on opening a path where none existed. 辟 means "to open up, refute" (辟谣 to refute a rumor).
