剧 jù "drama" + 院 yuàn "establishment": a building for staging drama, i.e. a theater. Distinguish 剧院 (a theater for plays/opera) from 电影院 (diànyǐngyuàn, a cinema). The 院 is the same as in 医院 and 学院.
