Mnemonic

沮 jǔ "to thwart, dampen" + 丧 sàng "to lose": one’s spirit thwarted and lost, i.e. dejected, downcast. Korean renders it as "dejection, low spirits". The state of losing energy and drive, downcast from failure or setback (感到沮丧 to feel dejected, 灰心沮丧 disheartened). Unlike the grief of 悲伤, 沮丧 is closer to a listlessness from broken drive or confidence. 沮 means "to thwart, dampen" (沮止); 丧 read sàng means "to lose" (丧失, 沮丧).
