建 jiàn "to build" + 筑 zhù "to construct, pile up": to build up, i.e. architecture, a building. Same as the Korean word geon-chuk (建築). It names a concrete building or structure, or the act of building (古老建筑 an old building). It shares 建 with 建设 (to develop undertakings), but 建筑 is closer to a concrete building. 筑 means "to build" (筑路 to build a road).
