建 jiàn "to build" + 造 zào "to make": to build and construct, i.e. to build (large physical structures: buildings, bridges, ships). Caution vs 建立: 建造 is physical construction (建造大桥), 建立 is abstract (建立关系). Opposite of 拆除 (to demolish).
