检 jiǎn "to examine" + 察 chá "to scrutinize": to examine and scrutinize, i.e. the procuratorate, prosecution. Same as the Korean word geom-chal (檢察). It refers to the judicial organ or function that investigates crimes and brings prosecutions (检察机关 procuratorial organ, 检察院 procuratorate). Note: it differs from the near-homophone 检查 (jiǎnchá, to inspect, check): 检察 is legal prosecution, while 检查 is general inspection. The 察 (to scrutinize, as in 警察 police) sets 检察 apart from 检查.
