化 huà "to transform/adorn" + 妆 zhuāng "to make up": to adorn the face, i.e. to put on makeup. 妆 has the woman radical 女. 化妆品 = cosmetics, 化妆师 = a makeup artist. As a separable verb, words can split it (化好妆 = to finish one’s makeup). Opposite of 卸妆 (to remove makeup).
