股 gǔ "share, thigh" + 市 shì "market": the market where shares are traded, i.e. the stock market. Korean renders it as "stock market". It is a short form for the market where 股票 (stocks) trade (股市大涨 the stock market surges). 股 originally means "thigh" but extends to "share, stock" (股份 a share, 股东 a shareholder). 市 means "market" (市场, 城市). It is a contraction of 股票市场.
