公 gōng "public" + 众 zhòng "the many": a Sino-Korean word "the public". Society at large (众) as opposed to private individuals, the bearer of opinion and interest. 公众人物 (a public figure), 公众场合 (a public place). Close to 大众, but 公众 stresses "the general public in the civic sphere". Opposite of 个人 (the individual).
