更 gēng "to change, renew" + 新 xīn "new": to change to the new, i.e. to update, to renew. Same as the Korean word gaeng-sin (更新). Bringing software, ideas or equipment up to date (更新软件 to update software). It shares 更 with 更换 (to replace a part), but 更新 focuses on bringing the old into a new state. 更 here is again gēng. The "gaeng" of Korean gaeng-sin is this very 更.
