隔 gé "to separate, block" + 阂 hé "to block, obstruct": both mean to block, i.e. a barrier between hearts, an estrangement, a rift. Korean renders it as "estrangement, a gap, a rift". A psychological wall between people created by misunderstanding or distrust (消除隔阂 to remove estrangement, 感情隔阂 an emotional rift). Unlike 间隔 (a physical interval), 隔阂 is a wall of the heart. 隔 means "to separate" (隔开, 隔离); 阂 means "to block" (a rare character).
