改 gǎi "to change" + 进 jìn "to advance": to change for the better, i.e. to improve. Korean renders it as "to improve" (same characters as gae-jin 改進). Refining a method, technique or product to be better (改进方法). It shares 改 with 改编 (to adapt) but focuses on advancing for the better. It is used almost interchangeably with 改善 (to improve). 进 means "to advance" (前进).
