负 fù "to bear, carry" + 担 dān "to shoulder": to bear and shoulder, i.e. a burden, to bear (a cost). Same as the Korean word bu-dam (負擔). Used as both noun ("burden") and verb ("to bear, take on"), as in 负担费用 (to bear the cost). 负 means "to bear" (负责 to be responsible); 担 is a polyphone: dān "to shoulder" but dàn "a load, carrying pole". 减轻负担 means to ease a burden.
