反 fǎn "to reverse" + 之 zhī (classical "it"): reversing it, i.e. conversely, on the contrary (a literary connective linking the opposite case). 反之亦然 = vice versa. 之 is the classical pronoun "it". Distinguish 反之 (conversely, connective) from 相反 (xiāngfǎn, adjective/adverb "on the contrary").
