Mnemonic
放 fàng "to let, put" + 大 dà "big": to make bigger, i.e. to enlarge, to magnify. Korean renders it as "to enlarge". It is used mainly of magnifying an image, photo or sound (放大照片, 放大镜 a magnifying glass). Distinguish it from 扩大 (to expand scale): 放大 enlarges an image or magnification, 扩大 widens scope. Figuratively it can mean to blow a problem out of proportion (放大问题).
