对 duì "to face" + 手 shǒu "hand/person": a Sino-Korean word "opponent, rival". The person (手) one faces (对), i.e. a competitor or adversary. 竞争对手 (competitor), 老对手 (longtime rival). The very opposite of 伙伴 (a partner alongside you): a 对手 stands against you. Less hostile than 敌人 (enemy), more "the one you contend with".
