地 dì "land, earth" + 形 xíng "shape, form": the shape of the land, i.e. terrain, topography. Same as the Korean word ji-hyeong (地形). It refers to the elevation and form of the land surface, such as mountains, rivers and plains (地形复杂 complex terrain, 地形险要 strategically rugged terrain). It pairs with 地貌: 地形 is the relief and contour (form) of the land, while 地貌 is its overall appearance or landscape. 形 means "shape" (形状, 形态); 地 means "land" (土地, 地面).
