慈 cí "loving" + 祥 xiáng "auspicious, gentle": gentle and loving in appearance, i.e. kindly and benevolent, said mainly of elders (the old, parents). The 慈 is the same as in 慈爱 (parental love) and 慈母 (a loving mother). Used of an elder's kindness, not of children.
