层 céng "layer" + 次 cì "order": a Sino-Korean word "level, layer". The order (次) of layers (层) stacked up and down. ① a level or tier (高层次) ② the structural stages of writing (层次分明). Where 体系 is the whole structure, 层次 is the hierarchy of levels within it. Similar to 等级.
