Mnemonic

悲 bēi "sad, grieved" + 伤 shāng "to hurt, wound": grief that wounds the heart, i.e. sad, sorrowful. The Korean bi-sang (悲傷) is rare; it is usually rendered as "sorrow, grief". The aching, sorrowful feeling from parting, death and the like (感到悲伤 to feel grief, 悲伤欲绝 overcome with grief). Close to 悲哀, but 悲伤 leans more toward heart-wounding sorrow. 悲 means "sad" (悲剧, 悲痛); 伤 means "to hurt, wound" (伤心, 受伤).
