版 bǎn "printing block" + 面 miàn "surface, side": the surface of a printing plate, i.e. a page of a newspaper/magazine or its layout. The 版 is the same as in 出版 (to publish) and 版本 (edition). Distinguish 版面 (page layout/space) from 页 (yè, a page number).
