安 ān "peaceful" + 宁 níng "tranquil": both "at peace", i.e. peaceful and settled, free of disturbance. Used of society, the mind, life (社会安宁, 内心安宁). Polyphone: 宁 is níng "peaceful" (安宁) but nìng "rather" (宁可); here níng. Distinguish 安宁 (peace, free of disturbance) from 平静 (píngjìng, general tranquility).
